Sweet Black Pepper Herring

This fresh and peppery herring was inspired by Rav Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev (Bird-itch-of) (1740-1809). Born in the town of Husakiv (Goo-saw-O-6228cove), now Ukraine. Rav Levi was known to be a righteous scholar even from his youth but he was best known as the “Defender of the Jewish people” because of the lengths he went to find the good in every person, displaying his obsessive love for all of His people, whether evil or pure. He was a part of the ten elite holy students of the Magid of Mezeritch, and later was a student of Rav Shmelke of Nikolsburg (Nickels-burg). Rav Levi was renound for his dedication and fiery enthusiasm in Prayer and Torah Study. His acclaimed sefer, Kedushas Levi is filled with brilliant insights on many levels, from the fundamentals to the kabbalistic. Upon hearing of Rav Levi’s passing, Rebbe Nachman of Breslov called it an eclipse of the Jewish people’s glory and that there is now something lacking in this world. Rav Levi’s fresh perspective and ardor are the inspiration for this savory and deeply flavored herring.
